Tabuk City, Kalinga – Governor Ferdinand Tubban motivates Homestyles and Handicrafts Industry to sustain the environment where they get raw materials from. “Haan tayo kuma nga isugal met daytoy environment tayo. We have to sustain our environment,” he said while explaining the necessity of planting more trees to counter the effects of unrestrained kaingin.

During the Manufacturer's Forum for Homestyles/Furnitures and Handicrafts Industry hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry – Kalinga at TAMPCO Inn and Training Center this November 26, it was presented that one of the challenges the Homestyles sector faces is the limited and unstable supply of raw materials.

It was elaborated that there is a limited or scarcity of resources, limited source of legal raw materials, and none or limited plantation area especially trees for wood crafts.

“Ket we have to sustain diyay pangalaan tayo iti raw materials tayo. Diyay iti ayan na metlang, iti DENR, they love to do their roles and responsibilities as well as the different agencies ket datayo met ... ket mapan yu lang met ireport [iti DENR] nu anya dagiay inmula yu tapnu iti kasta ket haanen nga agbalin nga illegal,” he said.

Tubban, on the other hand, expressed the need to plant trees amidst the calamities that just happened in the country.

“Siguro diyay met iti ipalpalagip ni Apo Diyos ka datayo ngamin puro tayo la unayen puted, puro puor,” he said.

“Haan tayo nga pagproblemaen dagiay annak tayo iti source da. Anya iti kayat na nga saoen? Agmula tayo met ah,” he added.

Tubban further said that agencies like DENR and the Agriculture are planning to make tree planting a family based so that each family will be the one to take care of the trees they planted.

“So kayat na saoen, awisen na nga every family iti entero nga Pilipinas most especially here in Kalinga ta adda iti kuna tayo nga idle lands ... nga dagitoy kuma ket mulaan tayo, haan nga mais metten. Both sides of the road nakatiptippang, pinuuran da nu haan inispray an da, minulaan da iti mais, intu nu nagbagyo, nag erode basol ni governor, basol ni presidente ta haan na met mapabasol diyay bagbagi na,” he said.

The bottomline, Tubban reminds, is that for us to have the sustainability of raw materials, we have to have the responsibility to take care of our environment by planting and re-planting trees.

“We have to sustain the motherland, daytoy daga nga ... inted na kenka nga pagtrabahoam ket kasta metlang kadatayo, [is] not for us to destroy but for us to maintain and improve,” he said.
