Cagayan, Philippines – With the onslaught of typhoon ‘Maring’ in this province, a group of corn farmers in Baggao, despite efforts to salvage their produce, were only able to save 20 out of 450 cavans of corn they had harvested.

In a now-viral Facebook post of Bobby Dumayag Jr., the farmers were seen scooping and collecting corn kernels that are already submerged in flood. One was seen using his bare hands, and another was using a bucket while others were holding the canvass in order for the corn kernels not to be totally swept by the water.

“I-share ko lang po ang aming tinulungan kaninang napadaan po kami 450 Cavan na mais ngunit eto lang po ang kanilang naisalba 20 Cavan lang na pagmamay-ari ng pamilya Mercado at kanyang mga kasamahang nagbilad,” the caption of Dumayag stated.

Meantime, due to the moderate to heavy rain brought by the Typhoon ‘Maring’ in Cagayan, some residents have already been evacuated from their houses. Additionally, few roads and bridges were already declared not passable due to flooding.

As of 11:00 AM of October 11, the water levels in Zinundungan River, Cagayan River, and Tucalan Creek were reported to be gradually rising. Moreover, the water level in Aparri is now on ‘orange’ level.

The orange warning is a sign that flooding is now threatening the area that residents are advised to be alert for possible evacuation. The “Red” signal would already constitute an emergency.
