High school valedictorian turned rebel killed in Mt. Province

Besao, Mountain Province – A high school valedictorian, who dreamt to be a doctor, is one of the two New People’s Army cadres killed during an armed encounter with the military and police in Gueday, Besao on October 30.


The Philippine National Police Mountain Province reports that killed during the encounter was Jan Michael Ayuste, who graduated as the class valedictorian at San Juan National High School in Quezon City and who has a degree in Biology at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. He wanted to be a doctor.


Police added that at the age of 24, Ayuste was recruited to join the NPA. He became Ka Simon and the intelligence officer of Platoon Mountain Province of the Kilusang Larangang Guerilla Abra-Mountain Province-Ilocos Sur (KLG-AMPIS) where then he was included in the NPA wanted list.

On October 30, Ayuste and a certain Marcos Kinaud Yocogan, alias Timmy/Corel/Melu, who is the commanding officer of their organization, got killed during a 10-minute skirmish with the government troops in Barangay Gueday.


To prepare them for a proper burial, the bodies of the slain cadres were cleaned, clothed, and placed in a coffin by the local government unit of Besao. Their remains were escorted by the AFP and the Mountain Province government to their families.
