Tabuk City, Kalinga – Guru Press Cordillera asked the same question to the Batch 2 of Tabuk City Councilor candidates who attended the last day of Voter's Education and Media Forum at Davidson Hotel this April 08, 2022.

The question is, “Do you think corruption is a problem in the city? How do we solve it?”

During the Yes or No segment, two of the six candidates claimed no, corruption is not a problem, while four answered yes.

Incumbent Councilors, Atty. Ivan Yannick Bagayao and Eduardo Sacayle are those who said "NO" while Atty. Errol Comafay Jr., Wilver Boclongan, Edwin Hidalgo, and Samuel Sumaal acknowledged that corruption is a problem that needs to be solved.

Kristian Wandag, during the event, confirmed attendance prior to the program but was not able to attend.

In a separate program, Boclongan, Bagayao and Comafay provided explanations for the question.

Boclongan’s response

"I think yes because as my, only my private opinion, there are so many issues arising concerning corruption in Tabuk City. There are so many issues, dadduma pay ket personalen iti ikasta da. So, if yes, how do we solve it? Datayo kuma a kandidato nya, datayo kuma iti mangirugi iti nasayaat. Datayo kuma iti mangirugi iti, uh, iti pulitika ket haan a narugit dba? Han a narugit ti politika, nu ag-question da met apay a sumrek ka iti politika ket narugit kunada. Amin rugi’t politika ti narugit ket datayo a kandidato ket ti, uh, tapnu masolve kuma daytoy, irugi a kandidato iti nadalus ken naimposoan a serbisyo. Ag-file tayo kuma ti certificate of candidacy tayo, ti purpose tayo lang ket to serve the people, diba? Kasi nu han a diay ti purpose tayo tapnu agtaray tayo a kas kandidato, talaga nga adda ti corruption so irugi tayo kuma kadagiti bagbagi tayo tapnu maawan ti ipus iti corruption, tapnu awan ti duwa-duwa.”

Bagayao’s response

“I think corruption is not a problem in the city, but it’s politics, so amin tayo a public servant, we have a goal to serve the people ket naduma-duma iti style ti pinag-serve, pinag-panunut, kapanunutan sunga nu ununaen tayo ti politika, haan tayo nga unaen iti panagsirbi ti tao, there will still (be) an issue of corruption uray nu ibaga tayo nga awan. Isunga I think there’s no problem iti corruption. Nu man nagi-file iti complaint, nga duma-duma, there is no perfect government. There is no perfect administration. Let our justice system decide nu anya ti black or white, nu anya ti ustu. But for me, as an incumbent Sanggunian or councilor who is, of course, part of the government, it is hard for me to say nga adda ti corruption. Ti problema ket han nga corruption, it is politics.”

Comafay’s response

“Iti damag mo nu panagkunak ket adda corruption ti city, adda ngem ti corruption ket han lang met iman nga dagituy city, adda pay nga gobyerno ket adda corruption. Ngem the problem now is that in our city, we don’t even recognize and accept nga adda ti corruption. So, the first way to solve this is first, accept and recognize that there is corruption in the city. How can we solve a problem that we don’t even recognize? How can we solve a problem if we cannot accept? The next way of solving this is more transparency, more transparency, more transparency. Secrecy will only breed corruption. Secrecy will only encourage corruption. So, to avoid corruption, first, accept that there is problem with corruption, recognize that there is corruption. Second, be transparent, be transparent, be transparent. Only by being transparent can we expose the corrupt practices and can we solve this.”

Other candidates were given other questions in accordance with the forum guidelines of the City Public Information Office (CPIO).
