Tabuk City, Kalinga - The scenic terrains of Talama, Magabbangon, and Binongsay in Tabuk City became the stage of the first-ever Kalinga Road to Trail Challenge, which attracted hundreds of runners.

Taking place on September 14, the trail run aimed at promoting sports and adventure, the province's tourism sector (as part of the World Tourism Month), and healthy living among public servants (as part of the month-long 125th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary).

With categories ranging from 3 kilometers to 21 kilometers, the challenge showcased not only the stamina of participants but also the province’s potential as a premier destination for ecotourism and adventure sports.

The Kalinga Information Office reported that there were more than 400 runners from the province and neighboring places who participated in the event.

Speaking before the crowd of athletes and public servants during the event, Odiem described the trail run as not just about fitness and tourism, but also as a celebration of Kalinga’s culture and resilience of the people.

Odiem emphasized that every stride taken along the muddy paths, river crossings, and steep terrains was not just a show of endurance but a story of Kalinga itself, describing the trails of Talama, Magabbangon, and Binongsay as not just paths, but rather representations of the strength of iKalingas.

According to him, running there mirrors the struggles (trekking mud, river crossing, scaling rugged slopes) of Kalinga communities, showing their determination to survive and overcome every hardship by pushing through together or through bayanihan.

“This race may span from 3 kilometers to 21 kilometers, but its true measure goes far beyond distance and finish lines. It is a celebration of resilience, community, and the breathtaking beauty of Kalinga trails,” added Odiem.

Apart from his view of the historic event, the vice-governor also commended the courage of the runners and expressed gratitude to the PLGU, headed by Governor James Edduba; the Tourism Services Office; the Human Resource Services Office; the Medical Team; the security forces; and other silent workers who ensured the event was safe, successful, and meaningful.
