Balbalan, Kalinga—Days of heavy rain and flash floods hit Maling, Balbalan, causing a landslide that swept a house and the evacuation of 7 families.

Punong Barangay Guilbert Gaano reported the incident happened around 6:30 PM on July 19, 2021, saying the soil above the house in his barangay loosened, probably due to the continuous downpour that led to erosion.

According to the report, the house of Deldin Balangui was totally destroyed. The kitchen was covered in mud and the main house moved, detached from its post, and fell over.

Fortunately, there were no casualties, and no one was injured.

Most of the victims are still in the evacuation centre. There were 45 individuals assisted by the MDRRMC. Relief goods were distributed to the affected families.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (MDRRM) Office, together with other members of the Local DRRM council, went to Maling today, July 20, 2021, to assess and conduct Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs analysis of the reported occurrence.

Findings of the MDRRM

The MDRRM found that there were no drainage systems in the area of the incident. Additionally, there was a blockage of water flow near the streams that were covered with landslides. Water systems were also washed out and were damaged due to the flood. Perlita Tumbali of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office mentioned that during typhoon Rosita, a landslide hit a house beside Mr. Balangui’s, which could have weakened the land surrounding the house. DRRMC said that the clearing operation will be done shortly as the major roads and bridges are already passable and that electricity has already been restored.

As of now, there is no longer an immediate threat, but the community was still advised to be attentive.
