Tabuk City, Kalinga―Saint Tonis College Incorporated (STCI) of Bulanao is considering the gradual opening of classes on limited face-to-face for its nursing students this incoming school year.

Saint Tonis College Inc. is the lone school in Kalinga that offers nursing education. It is one of the producers that equips nursing manpower globally, thus aiming to produce quality nursing manpower despite the learning restrictions imposed amidst the pandemic.

Lucky Roaquin, Vice President of Philippine Nurses Association (PNA)-Kalinga and STCI Nursing Program Coordinator, relates that the institution is doing an intensive discussion on the planning and implementation of limited face-to-face class before they file for an application to the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines (CHED).

“We haven’t applied yet, but we are all, internally, doing a lot of discussions on the planning and implementation. Limited face-to-face may augment the missing factor in nursing and allied health programs in the province and in the region,” he narrated.

“We still aim to produce efficient and productive nurses amidst this pandemic that currently affecting the Philippine Education. It is a collaborative effort of everybody to ensure that learning will still take place maintaining and strictly following the protocols set forth by the School and the Government,” Roaquin added.

There are more than 200 nursing students currently enrolled in the institution’s College of Nursing.

The implementation of face-to-face class is in line with CHED Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) 2021-001or Guidelines on the gradual reopening of the campuses of higher education institutions for limited face-to-face class during the CoViD-19 pandemic.

On the other hand, Saint Louis University is the only university in the Cordillera region that was included in the list of 24 higher education institutions (HEIs) allowed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to implement ‘limited face-to-face classes.

The university has started its limited face-to-face classes for the medical clerkship in March.

Meantime, the STCI shall ask for the support and approval of the local government which will then be forwarded to CHED for approval of their application.
