Man wanted for killing drinking buddy arrested after 17 years of hiding

Sta. Marcela, Apayao – A fugitive who had been on the run for 17 years was arrested by police on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The 53-year-old suspect, whose name was withheld, was wanted for a homicide case in 2006. He had evaded arrest since the incident.

Accordingly, while the suspect was having a drinking spree with the victim on May 08, 2006, in Nueva, Sta. Marcela, the two had a heated argument causing the victim to punch the accused.

The suspect fought back by attacking and wounding the victim with a stone, resulting in the untimely death of the latter.

Sta. Marcela Chief of Police, PCapt. Ginabel Dao-inon, in an interview, said they were about to head to La Union this week to arrest the suspect after receiving information that he was there.

However, a tip that the accused was in the municipality visiting a relative, particularly in Barangay Nueva, prompted them to verify the information. This resulted in the arrest of the suspect after nearly two decades of hiding.

He is now in police custody for documentation prior to his turnover to the court of origin.

His case has a recommended bail bond of P40,000, the police added.
