Tabuk City, Kalinga – Emphasizing the national government’s commitment to inclusive public service, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rexlon “Ting” Gatchalian assured communities in remote areas that no place is too far, no population too small, and no secluded barangay beyond the reach of the DSWD. He underscored that areas farther from city centers are often the highest priority for government programs.

Speaking before various stakeholders during the Mangili Night hosted by the Provincial Government of Kalinga, led by Governor James S. Edduba and Vice Governor Dave Odiem, on February 4 at the Davidson Hotel in Bulanao, Gatchalian highlighted the department’s efforts to bring essential services closer to marginalized and remote communities.

“Nandito ako kasi lagi akong nire-remind ng Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. na sa DSWD, walang malayo, walang maliit na lugar, at walang liblib na pook na hindi naming kayang puntahan—para alam ninyo na ang pamahalaang nasyonal ay nakikita kayo, naririnig kayo, at tutulungan po kayo. Ang mandato namin: mas malayo sa city centers, mas malayo sa kapitolyo—mas importanteng puntahan,” he said.

The secretary also highlighted that DSWD programs go beyond financial assistance and disaster response, citing key initiatives such as the Sustainable Livelihood Program, the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), and the Kalahi-CIDSS (Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan – Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services) as long-term solutions designed to uplift communities from poverty.

Gatchalian added that his visit also helps the department assess programs and better understand local cultures, ensuring that services are tailored to each community’s specific needs.

“Alam naming unique ang inyong mga kultura at pangangailangan—pwede naming pagandahin ang mga programa namin para maging angkop sa inyong mga pananaw at kultura. On top of our mission to check the programs, we cannot let pass the opportunity to immerse in your very rich culture—from the fabrics, sa sayaw, sa lengguahe. Sabi ko nga, not every day ay bibigyan ka ng pagkakataon na ma-appreciate up-close ang espesyal ninyong kultura at rehiyon,” he added.

With renewed commitment to the local government of Kalinga and its people, Gatchalian assured the iKalingas that the DSWD will continue prioritizing remote communities and adapting programs to their needs and unique culture.
