Mayor Gumilab lauds Bugnay folks for re-installing Kalinga heroes’ monuments

Tinglayan, Kalinga – Mayor Sacrament Gumilab of this town lauded the efforts of the people of Bugnay for re-installing the monuments of Macli-ing Dulag, Lumbaya Gayudan and Pedro Dungoc to its original site at Sitio Iker.


In an interview, Gumilab said the act of the yBugnay community to preserve their history and culture, signifies their love and respect to the heroes, who fought against the construction of the Chico Dam during the 1970’s trying to protect their land and prevented the displacement of cultural communities residing along the Chico River during the period.

“This act would show to the whole world that the people of Bugnay and Tinglayan would not tolerate anything that could destroy the monuments of these heroes, who have shown bravery in fighting for the lands of the Ykalinga and Cordilleran people,” the mayor stated.


“The monuments were destroyed by unknown people that angered the people of Tinglayan so its re-installation will give light to the heroic act of these people. It’s something a mang-signify that the people of Tinglayan value so much the heroes and they look up to them,” he added.

As recalled, the monuments of the three heroes have been dismantled by unknown individuals on January this year which was condemned by various groups and gained negative feedbacks from the people of Tinglayan.


The re-installation made on April 9, as told by Bugnay Barangay Captain Robert Dumpao, was pushed through to celebrate the valor and sacrifices of said local heroes.


“Habang awan pay ti pondo ti pannakaiyakar ti monument ket rebbeng na lang nga isubli mi tapnu haan nga aglati ti steel panel ti monument. Nu addan tu ti pondo na ti pannakaiyalis na ket santu maiyakar," the barangay captain further said.



Relocation of the monument


When asked regarding the relocation of the monuments, Gumilab said a site development plan was already prepared by the Department of Public Works and Highways and they are just waiting for its funding.


The fund, he said, will come from the DPWH, Provincial Government of Kalinga and the Local Government of Tinglayan.


“Actually, we have already allotted a fund and we are to prepare additional amount for the said project to push through,” the mayor disclosed.


“Construction will begin when sufficient fund is available,” he added.
