Mayoyao, Ifugao soon to supply “Yuyu” fish in region CAR

Mayoyao, Ifugao – A P25 million “Yuyu” hatchery and training center funded by the Bayanihan To Recover as One (Bayanihan 2) will soon be realized in the Municipality of Mayoyao, Ifugao.

The ground breaking ceremony of the facility was concluded last Monday, February 8, 2021.

BFAR-Cordillera said the project aims to enhance the ‘capacities and productivity of fisherfolks in the municipality and its nearby municipalities in loach breeding and propagation.

The Japanese Weather Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) or locally known as dojo, yu-yu, panispis or pikaw was introduced in the Philippines before the World War II along with the so-called Japanese snails as food staple of Japanese soldiers.

It then became one of the known fish species in the region because of its tolerance to cold temperature and its ability to survive for a long period of time in very shallow water or even out of water. However, due to commercialization, the production of the fish, now having a high market price, decreased.

In a statement made by Regional Director Lilibeth Signey, she said out of the total fund, the 21 million will be utilized for the building outlay, while the remaining 4 million will be used in purchasing hatchery paraphernalia and other training supplies.

The rehabilitation of the yu-yu hatchery, training of fisher folk beneficiaries, and distribution of yu-yu fingerlings in rice terraces, she said, are among the project’s components.

To achieve the projected annual production of 500,000 – 1,000,000 fingerlings, BFAR-CAR said 200 fisher folks in Mayoyao and its nearby municipalities will undergo training and be equipped with loach breeding skills.

Mayor Jimmy Padchanan Jr. as a response for the endeavour expressed his thanks and committed his support to said project.

“We likewise commit to support this endeavor that with our strong partnership and cooperation we will succeed to make this an industry to benefit not only Mayoyao but also the municipalities of Aguinaldo, Banawe, Hungduan, and other interested towns of Ifugao province,” the mayor said.

“I believe that this project, through the intervention of our Almighty God, this program will prosper so let us help one another attain our goal toward in making Mayoyao a loach capital of Ifugao, and loach capital of the Philippines,” he added.
