Mt. Province, Philippines – Corporal Gener Tinangag, who was killed during the Marawi siege in 2017 while ‘selflessly and single handedly’ saving his comrades, was bestowed the Medal of Valor, the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ highest military honor.

The Philippine Marine Corps reports that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte conferred the award recently to Tinangag who was then Private First Class and newly reported Assistant Automatic Rifleman.

Tinangag earned the award when he along with three other Marines volunteered to extricate wounded and killed troops and evacuate them to the casualty collection point(CCP) while in the middle of an intense battle against the Maute group.

Exhausted after numerous trips from the engagement area to the CCP to evacuate their injured comrades, the rest of Tinangag’s team sought cover and took a rest.

However, Tinangag didn’t stop and acted without orders. He was said to have crawled through the rubbles, repeatedly exposing himself to the enemies’ line of fire in order to get close to other casualties.

With grenades and heavy machine gun fires surrounding them, he bravely made four separate trips to rescue four wounded marines from a mosque. Tinangag pushed on with trying to save other soldiers until he was spotted by the enemy, spraying bullets in his direction.

Tinangag while recovering another body was shot on the stomach and was peppered with shrapnel from the enemy’s grenade. Despite his injuries, he managed to bring the body to the CCP which was 200 meters away before he collapsed and was later declared dead at the medical station.

Meantime, over 1,200 people, mostly militants, have been killed during the battle in Marawi from May 23 to October 23, 2017.
