“More women should be engaged in government”- IWI 168 nominee Mangawit on women’s month

Updated: Mar 16, 2022

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Virginia Mangawit, the former Chief Superintendent of Correctional Institution for Women of the Bureau of Corrections, spoke during the webinar on Gender Equality, Women Empowerment in Politics and Voter’s Education on March 11, 2022, underscoring that the low participation of women in the government should be increased.

Higher participation, she explained, means more power of women to push support to all sectors that involve women, adding that this is likewise to equalize or balance the men's and women's power.

Mangawit cited the statistics stating that despite women comprising 50% of the total population in the country, they only occupy almost ¼ seats in the government. This does not meet the minimum women's participation which, according to scholars, must be at least 30%.

She related her experience as the first Cordilleran to be the Chief Superintendent of the Correctional Institution for Women of BuCor in Mandaluyong City. She served from 2019 until October 5, 2021, where she promoted women in higher positions.

“Being a Cordilleran, inprom-promote tayo met ti region tayo ket adu dagiti babbai nga nakatugaw idiay nangangatu nga posisyon isu nga ti participation tayo nga babbai ket ngumatngatu metten…Adu ti women from the region nga fit da met nga maki-compete ken maki-participate ti activities Gender and Development and women empowerment,” Mangawit stated.

Having shown to the country the kind of leadership of women from Cordillera, to her, has been an honor.

Mangawit encouraged her fellow women to be active and take part in the activities for women, including politics.

The former chief superintendent is the first female nominee from the region to head the Igorot Warriors International or IWI.
