Tinglayan, Kalinga – The Local Government of Tinglayan on June 2, 2021 reiterated that re-opening of tourism activities in Tinglayan is not yet possible, as needed preparations of stakeholders involved in the tourism sector is not yet complied.

During the Chumchumog meeting held in Buscalan community, the locals plead for the re-opening of tourism since this would help them recover from the financial crisis as a result of the pandemic, given that their source of livelihood and local employment is greatly dependent on the tourism industry.

Mayor Sacrament Gumilab called for a meeting with concerned officials to get their support to explain to the people why there is a need to delay the resumption of tourism activities in the area.

Larae Lactao of the Municipal Information Office said the community of Buscalan has not yet complied with the outstanding commitment agreement with the Municipal Health Office last March 2020.

This required the community to set up an isolation unit, vaccination rate should reach 70 percent and implementation of the programs of solid waste management must be observed before tackling the resumption of tourism activities.

The Municipal Tourism Office has also mandated tour guides and tattoo artists to renew their IDs and for homestay owners to get their sanitary permits.

For the renewal of IDs, only 42 out of 191 concerned individuals complied while 2 out of 37 homestay owners have adhered what the MTO required.

With the very low compliance, Councilor and Committee on Health Chairman Bartholeme Aboli said that the re-opening of tourism won’t be granted, and the stakeholder should first ask themselves of their readiness if they want to re-open the industry.

"The question we should ask is not about, 'Should we open tourism?' but rather 'Are we ready to open tourism?" he said.

The LGU then decided to make thorough preparations to include the compliance of all the necessary requirements that they need to undertake.

Mayor Gumilab, also appealed to the people to weigh their situation, and think of what is more important, and that they should consider health as top priority.

"Our goal is not to stop tourism, but to delay its re-opening until we are rest assured that the community can handle the brunt of tourism. We are neither against you, nor on the re-opening of tourism but we must take into account the reality that Covid-19 is rampant and we must take caution to prevent mishaps from happening," he said.
