Cagayan, Philippines – Around 38 Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) followers in Sta. Teresita withdrew their support to the organization after learning of the 2-hour firefight between the rebels and government troops in their neighboring town, Gonzaga this January 29.

5th Infantry Division disclosed that these CTG supporters took the opportunity to appear to the authorities after the armed encounter in Sta. Clara, Gonzaga that disturbed the quietness they enjoyed for some time.

It was related by the Division that the rebels demanded provisions and other necessities from the people there. If they disagreed to give, they get blackmailed or terrorized.

They also revealed that the rebels urged them to join the assembly of armed members in Gonzaga to plan atrocities for their anniversary as well as for the incoming 2022 election.

The 38 supporters told the authorities that they refused to join the assembly, which resulted in their harassment.

Meantime, Brigadier General Steve Crespillo, the Brigade Commander of the 501st Infantry Brigade mentioned that government troops are still doing and search and clearing operation at site of encounter. A pursuit operation has also been undertaken.

Crespillo stated they are going to put more pressure on the CTG members, so they will surrender.

Major General Laurence Mina, the Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, said that the army will not stop looking for these terrorist groups.

“We are doing our best together with the other security forces to secure our people against the CTGs. We will hunt them down and make them pay for their wrongdoings to the full extent of the law,” he conveyed.
