Only 6 towns remain ASF free in Cagayan

Cagayan, Philippines — Out of the 28 municipalities and one city, six places in the province have zero cases of African swine fever (ASF), says Provincial Veterinary Office.

Dr. Myka Ponce through the Cagayan Provincial Information Office said that the six municipalities have not documented any ASF case from January to November 10 this year while the other 28 areas are still affected with several numbers of hogs catching the virus.

Based on data released, these ASF-free municipalities in Cagayan include Sta. Teresita, Lasam, Sta. Praxedes, Calayan, Peñablanca and Rizal.

Since the start of ASF in Cagayan in November 2019 up to present, a total of 9,654 pigs have been killed and buried after they were infected with the virus. Additionally, 2,405 hog raisers in the province are affected.

Meantime, the hogs in the slaughterhouse in Alcala, Ballesteros, Gonzaga, Camalaniugan, and Lal-lo were said to have been infected with ASF. This is after the Provincial Veterinary Office has collected blood samples after noticing that one of the infected swine was asymptomatic or hasn’t shown any symptoms of ASF.

As of this writing, more than P14 million financial assistance was said to have already been distributed to hog raisers affected by ASF.
