‘Only registered online accounts, pages, website may run campaign ads’ – COMELEC Kalinga

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The Commission on Election-Kalinga reiterated anew their call for political candidates in the locality that they only have until January 31, 2022 to register their official social media accounts and websites with the poll body.

The commission released their advisory this January 26 through their official Facebook page.

Signed by the new acting Provincial Election Supervisor, Atty. Elenita Julia T. Capuyan, the advisory warned that only verified accounts, websites, blogs or social media pages may run electoral ads and boost or promote electoral posts for the May 9, 2022 election.

The provision is part of the expanded social media regulation under the Fair Election Act or Republic Act No. 9006.

The law allows internet, mobile, and social media propaganda. Online campaigning, it said, can be utilized through the use of pictures, audio and video clips regardless of duration and all combinations of such formats.

Section 36 or COMELEC Resolution No. 10730 likewise permits local candidates to hold peaceful online political meetings or rallies during the campaign period which will commence on March 25 up to May 7 this year.

Aspirants who wish to participate in said method of campaigning shall register with the COMELEC’s Education and Information Department through the link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdAsDLWrjBDS1ZXIOv81hv0FgLwlQMr1o1uTt2fCC6uGXSeWA/viewform

The commission shall penalize the candidate along with the content creator of a post, owner or administrator of any website who airs or shows the political advertisements, without the required data or having false information.

Section 7 of the resolution states violators shall be criminally liable with the candidate under Sec. 264 of the Omnibus Election Code and, if applicable, further suffer the penalties of suspension or revocation of franchise or permit in accordance with law.
