Phivolcs to further assess cause of recent earthquakes in Cagayan and Isabela

Isabela, Philippines – The simultaneous tremor experienced in Maconacon, Isabela affecting nearby places might have been caused by the movement of Divilacan fault, says the Office of Civil Defense in Region 2.

Recently, Isabela and Cagayan were struck by earthquakes, causing alarm and fear among the public. The OCD in the region, along with Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS), then conducted assessment to determine its cause.

In a press release, Cagayan Provincial Information Office relayed that the said fault, according to Director Leon DG Rafael Jr. of OCD 2, is extending north to south up to Maconacon that can reach to some parts of the sea.

The PHIVOLCS, he added, pledged to visit the area for further assessment.

Another theory that the OCD is looking into as the reason of the quakes is the possible movement of the Philippine Rise.

As the office prepares for the 2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) 2023 on June 08, the director called for the community to report to the authorities if they happen to observe cracks possibly caused by earthquakes.
