P1M greenhouses granted to Baguio farmers to produce more strawberries

Baguio City, Philippines—To increase the production of quality strawberry runners (seedlings) in the city, the Department of Agriculture recently gave four twin tunnel greenhouse amounting to P1 million to 23 members of the San Andreas Strawberry Growers Association (SASG) of Bilis, Sto. Tomas Central, in Baguio City.

Each twin tunnel greenhouse is expected to generate at least 30,000 strawberry runners which will be marketed to strawberry-producing municipalities in Benguet and Mt. Province.

DA likewise provided fertilizers, water pumps, and capability-building trainings to ensure that the organization could sustain the utilization of the greenhouse, which amounts to P250, 000 each.

According to Sammy Lang-ay, President of said association, DA-Cordillera through its partnership project with Benguet State University shall also be giving 500 clean tissue-cultured strawberry plantlets a start-up capital.

He shared that once they generate profit from the interventions given, a portion of it will be saved for their organization’s fund.

Lang-ay added that some of the planting materials will be given to their fellow farmers in the area for reproduction.

Meantime, Rosa Masing, a member of the organization, expressed gratefulness to the agency for the provision of the greenhouses.

She said the facility given will enable the strawberry growers to yield strawberry runners all year round and lessen losses brought about by typhoons, pests, and other extreme weather conditions.

The provision of the facility was realized through the Department of Agriculture’s High-Value Crops Development Program (HDVCP) as part of their program to strengthen the country’s chances of attaining food self-sufficiency, economic growth, and enhancement of consumer’s health and welfare.

It also aims to promote the production, processing, marketing, and distribution of high-value crops.

As recalled, DA-Cordillera through the Bayanihan II or to Recover as One Act will be distributing a total of 16 greenhouses to increase the production of strawberry runners in Benguet and Mt. Province
