Tabuk student in wheelchair defies odds to graduate from college

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Being disabled does not mean “unabled,” as proven by a student in Tabuk City who defied the odds to graduate from college.

At 9 months old, Marion B. Apaling and his family met with a car accident while on their way to Tuguegarao. With the incident’s impact, his feet were fractured and his spinal cord was damaged, which resulted in him being in a wheelchair and suffering from orthopedic disability.

His mobility impairments did not stop him from believing in and achieving his dreams, which include obtaining a degree in information technology.

Apaling, who traces his roots to Balbalan and Pinukpuk but is currently residing in the city, goes to school in a wheelchair and is at times carried by his classmates, especially when they have classes upstairs.

“Limited lang dagiti kayak maubra for example, nu P.E. (Physical Education) class ket kasla exempted nak. I want also to join basketball activities but because of my disability, di ko nagagawa,” he said.

However, with the tremendous support he had been receiving from his family and friends, he did not think much of his impairment as a struggle, instead, he turned it into his inspiration to go on and eventually finish his studies.

On Thursday, June 29, he was carried to receive his diploma on stage, joined by his proud mother.

As Apaling puts it, “Disabilities are not a hindrance, but a testament to the power of determination and resilience. As I proudly graduate, I stand as living proof that limitations exist only in the mind.”

He expressed gratitude to his family, relatives, and friends who had been backing him since he started going to school.

Now at 23, he plans to show and prove more of his capabilities as he encouraged others who are suffering from any disability to pursue their dreams.

“The impossible becomes possible, just have faith. Our disability is not a hindrance, it’s only us who think it is,” he underscored.
