Tinglayan, Kalinga – Mayor Sacrament Gumilab and members of the Municipal Health Board have pushed for the implementation of Zero Open Defecation (ZOD) program as well as persuade non-compliant households to observe healthier and safer way of managing their homes and surroundings.

According to the records of the municipality, a number of households are yet to have their own restrooms.

In the inspection conducted by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) and Municipal Health Office (MHO), they found 7 out of 54 households in Barangay Old Tinglayan were not compliant with the Zero Open Defecation (ZOD) program of the municipality.

This means they are yet to build their own bathroom and comfort room based on what the program requires.

Municipal Information Officer Larae Lactao said households in Tinglayan are required to set up toilets with septic tanks.

Proper animal and waste management

For the construction of pig pens, the community were obedient and no astray pigs were observed to be roaming around the community. Nevertheless, when the proper waste segregation was checked, it was seen that some households are non-observant of said program.

Each household, Lactao disclosed, has to provide four sacks for segregation of waste particularly plastic, cans, cellophane, and bottles. This, she said, should be openly displayed not only for easy access but to also encourage good habits and the discipline of proper disposal among children in the area.

What Mayor Gumilab thinks should be done?

With the result of the inspection, Mayor Sacrament Gumilab encouraged the community to continue supporting the health sanitation program by undertaking the advised actions required by concerned offices.

“From the start ket ti priority ti munisipyo ket health and sanitation, idi han tayu unay ob-obserbaren daytuy ket gapu garud dituy, laganap ti sakit ngem gapu ta naadal tayu ti naglinis through these programs, mayat metten iti resulta na,” Gumilab said.

“Lumminis ti angin, healthy ti ub-ubbing. Naganas iti ili nga nalinis ket maysa daytuy nga pakakitaan nga agtultuloy nga dumurdur-as ti ili tayo nga Tinglayan,” he added emphasizing the municipality’s tagline, “Tongarayan Umunno-unnoy.

Importance of cleanliness emphasized

Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer Pacita Dangi likewise stressed the importance of cleanliness and told them that cleanliness should begin at home.

"Cleanliness starts from the household. Let us all be responsible of our own actions and advocate cleanliness in our own household,” she said.

Meanwhile, Chairman on Health, SB Bartholome Aboli told the Old Tingayan community to take one step at a time in abiding with said programs for positive results to be achieved.

"Maintenance and protection of barangay Old Tinglayan depends on no one but you, its people,” Aboli added.
