Burnham Park Lake has always been a well-known tourist spot in the country's Summer Capital.

While its park offers bicycle riding, skating areas, sports, gaming, and even food trip, the lake, meantime, offers angling as well as boating.

But what's new with the lake apart from it is now bluish green and not murky?

Effective Tuesday last week, before boating in the Cordillera's 'mother of all parks', passengers and operators are now required to wear a life vest.

This, according to a report by Baguio Public Information Office on Monday, July 3, is to ensure public safety and security.

It is in March this year that a boat capsized in the lake resulting in 8 people being ferried to a hospital in the city.

This may have prompted Councilor Isabelo Cosalan Jr. to pass earlier in May the ordinance requiring such safety gear before riding a watercraft in the lake.

With the new ordinance, watercraft concessionaires and operators are mandated to provide quality life vests to those getting on board their boats.

To ensure that standard life vests will be provided to boat riders, inspection and registration of said safety gears will be done during the renewal of a permit to operate watercraft.

If failed to abide by said existing regulation, the watercraft operator and the concessionaire shall be penalized with P1,000 for their first offense, P1,500 on their second offense, and P2,500 for the third offense.

However, Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong was given the power to convert fines levied under the ordinance to community service when necessary.
