Before she took and topped the May 16-17, 2021 X-Ray Tech Licensure Examination, Mayshell Baliling Basiag kept in mind that she is no good and that there is no room for relaxation.

Day in and day out, night after night, Mayshell devoured books after books until all her energy was drained. She said just like any other examinee, she faced the same anxiety, stress, and problems during her preparation for the licensure examination.

Out of 77 individuals who took the May 2021 X-Ray Technologist board exam, 21 passed.

Mayshell’s journey to X-Ray Technology

Prior to her enrollment at the International School of Asia and the Pacific, Mayshell, 22 years old and from Barangay Dilag, disclosed that she wanted to take up Veterinary Medicine not X-Ray Technology. And thus, she first took the course at the Cagayan State University. Unfortunately, she only survived the first semester and later decided to go back home to Tabuk due to “homesickness.”

The following semester, Mayshelle found out that her friend signed up for X-Ray Technology course and, without much thought, inked her name in the list to take the same course.

She admitted that it was not easy for her to switch to X-Ray Technology from Veterinary Medicine, especially from something you really like to become to a second choice. Nevertheless, time taught her to love it and to focus on it.

Desire to top the licensure examination

Mayshell graduated in July 2019 and prepared for the 2020 X-ray board exam, but due to the pandemic, their board exam was rescheduled.

Mayshell said she wanted to top the exam but didn’t go to any review center since she didn’t have the money to pay for the review fee. As a last resort, she did self-review using reviewers bought online, downloaded PDFs from the net, and notes of her classmate who enrolled in a review center. “Sabi ko kay Lord… Ayaw ko ng pasa lang, gusto ko Top 1,” she said.

For many months, she studied hard and during those times when she felt like quitting due to exhaustion, she would remind herself that she had to review more. Although she put much effort in the review, Mayshell said she didn’t expect to top the exams not even to pass. She said during the first day of the test she was anxious, nervous, and felt like crying for fear of mental block.

“Kasi ‘yung ni-review ko po sa isang subject… konte lang po lumabas,” she said.

Answered prayer

When the results of the exams came out, Mayshell bested all 20 other passers with a rating of 84.75%. Mayshell made history as the first in Kalinga to top the X-Ray Technologist Licensure Examination. With her experience, she advised students to do their best and to find inspiration in their loved ones.

Hi future topnotcher of Tabuk, do your best ‘wag paka sigurado kahit magaling ka. ‘Wag makalimot sa taas study, study, study and pray,” she said.
