Witness Balbalan's FIRST 'Pasilaw' on Dec. 1

Balbalan, Kalinga – The Balbalan Municipality is inviting everyone to witness its first ‘Pasilaw’ which will be held on Thursday, December 1, at the municipal ground in Barangay Salegseg.


The event with a theme, ‘Osan Bituwon, Silaw Situn Lubong’ is said to be the simultaneous lighting of all Christmas lights and lanterns at the Balbalan municipal hall, at the same time, will shine the hearts of the Balbalan people.


Further, Balbalan Tourism describes the lights which will appear on the ‘Pasilaw’ as symbolic lights for the people to inspire them to keep ‘thriving in life’ and fill their beings with ‘love’.


Contested activities


Among the contested activities in said event are the ‘Hand-held Lantern Parade Competition’ and ‘Lantern -Making Competition’.


Participants of the Hand-held Lantern Parade Competition are from 6 schools in the municipality, including primary and secondary schools, with 20 members of each team.



To be able to participate, competitors for the hand-held lantern must craft original, creative, and uniform out of recycled and indigenous materials which reflect the culture and tradition of Balbalan.


The parade will start at 5:30 pm on said date while the route would be from Balbalan Central School ground going to the Municipal Hall.

For the lantern -making competition, it is composed of 10 participants, mostly business establishment owners and other civil society organizations within the municipality. The design of the lantern must be a five-point star-shaped made of local and recycled materials that emphasizes the heritage of Balbalan.


Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners.


Meantime, Mayor Almar Malannag invites the public to come and join the event as they welcome the Christmas season through the ‘Pasilaw’.


“We would like to invite everyone to our first ever Pasilaw this December 1 at the municipal grounds as we welcome the yuletide season. Let's make this moment the most wonderful time of the year as we light up each other with our lanterns and lights,” Mayor Malannag posted on his official Facebook account.
