Ykalinga 18-year-old kickboxer tops national tournament

Tabuk City, Kalinga – An 18-year-old yKalinga student bested other martial artists from the different provinces in the Philippines during the national tournament held in Wangal, La Trinidad last April 30, 2022.


Arvin Sabado of Team Tribu Banwar in Kalinga represented the province in K1 or kickboxing during the ‘Young Blood Relentless’ tournament of the World Council Combat Sports Philippines at the Benguet Sports Complex.

In an interview with GURU Press, Sabado’s coach Erwin Tagure said that the competition was participated by 38 athletes from Benguet, Baguio, Pangasinan, Laguna, Manila, and Kalinga.


The competition events are composed of 3 disciplines which include mixed martial arts, boxing, and K1 or kickboxing. Kalinga he said participated in the 65 kg category of the kickboxing event, from which Sabado triumphed after a series of fights.

Tagure disclosed that this is the first time Sabado joined a national martial arts tournament after participating in inter-school competitions.


When asked about their preparation for the event, Tagure explained that they have been training for two months focusing on strength and conditioning, pad workout, technical sparring, and road workout.

Winning the 65kg kickboxing at the ‘Young Blood Relentless’ tournament is only the beginning for Sabado, as he is set to participate and represent Kalinga in another competition set on June 24, 2022.


Sabado is a second-year Criminology student at Kalinga State University.
