Tabuk City, Kalinga – Five individuals in Tinglayan, ages between 21 to 30, were reported to have been recruited by the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) this November.

This alerted Kalinga Police Provincial Director PCOL Davy Vicente Limmong to meet with the parents and relatives of the recruited individuals along with Municipal Mayor Sacrament Gumilab, elders, and the barangay officials in Basao.

Limmong said that the family along with the officials were not aware about the recruitment.

“... the relatives, the parents are not aware nga narecruit da dagiay and they are demanding nga these individuals [left leaning group] to return their relatives,” he said.

Limmong added that there should be 6, however, the other one didn’t go with the recruiters.

Some of them are the breadwinners of their families. “Ammu tayo met ti tribe tayo that it depends on male to represent the tribe or the family tapos kasjay paylang nga intuloy da piman [nga nirecruit da isuda].”

He added that most of these recruited people are ‘no read, no write’.

According to Limmong, there is no NPA active in Basao, Tinglayan, “awan met ti active nga NPA nga agagyan ijay Basao but the problem is it become a place for recruitment and they take advantage on the innocence of these individuals.”

“Kayat da agawid ngem they don’t know nu kasatnu nga agawid”

Limmong said that usually people who get recruited only realize what they have signed up for when they are already in the mountains and by that time, it is too late and hard to get out, as stated by some surrenderers.

“Adayu dan and there’s no mean, awan met kwarta da nga agawid. They don’t know the place nga napanan da, so diyay ti maysa nga concern da according kadagiay inmuna nga nagsurrender,” he said.

“Kayat da agawid ngem they don’t know nu kasatnu nga agawid,” he added.

Before the government provides assistance for former rebels, there are screenings to be done

The Kalinga Police Provincial Director emphasized that while the government provides various assistance to former rebels who decided to turn their back from the movement, before they receive the assistance there will be screenings.

That’s why he said, if one of the reasons why people join the movement is to avail of the assistance, they have to know that there are screenings to be done before a former rebel receives the assistance.
