Lal-lo, Cagayan – To ensure safety of drivers and residents and avoid a repeat of bridge collapse in Cagayan, a new 15-ton weight limit is now being enforced when passing the Magapit Suspension Bridge in Lal-lo.

The imposition of the 15 ton weight limit was made following the structural inspection by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), along with the DPWH Central Office, on October 7, 2025.

After the Piggatan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan fell on October 6, the DPWH – Cagayan First District Engineering Office advised lowering the capacity of the over five decades old Magapit Bridge, as a precaution.

The Piggatan Bridge collapsed Monday afternoon when several ten-wheeler trucks were crossing the structure, marking the second bridge tragedy in the region this year.

The new load limit of 15 tons, according to LGU Lal-lo, is an initiative of the Municipal Engineering Office and will be enforced on vehicles crossing the said bridge, which started on October 8, 2025.

While the bridge was retrofitted in 2012 and can carry up to 20 tons, ongoing wear and aging have led officials to call for stricter safety precautions.

To reinforce safety measures, the Local Government of Lal-lo has placed warning signs on both ends of the bridge to inform motorists, especially truck drivers, about the new weight limit with The PNP Lal-lo assigned to monitor the area to ensure compliance.

Said bridge is a lifeline for northern communities, enabling trade, travel, and access to essential services—linking the eastern and western areas of Cagayan.
