2 rebels killed in Cagayan clash appear to be students - 501st Infantry Brigade

Cagayan, Philippines - The two members of New People’s Army (NPA) who were killed in a clash at Sitio Biguc, Barangay Alucao, Santa Teresita, Cagayan appear to be students, the army said.

At around 3:30 p.m. of Wednesday, May 3, the operating troops of the Philippine Army’s 95th Infantry Battalion, under operation control of 501st Infantry Brigade, encountered about 20 NPA rebels from Komiteng Probinsya (KOMPROB) Cagayan at Isabela, Komiteng Rehiyon Cagayan Valley (KRCV).

The encounter resulted in the death of the two rebels and the recovery of four high-powered firearms – two R4 rifles, one M16 rifle and one M653 rifle.

The Commander of 501st IB, Col. Ferdinand Melchor Dela Cruz, in his interview with SMNI News Cagayan Valley, disclosed among the two killed was a “promising” student from a prestigious university in Manila.

The other fatality, he added, might also be a student whose parents do not have knowledge of his whereabouts.

No casualty was reported from the army.

On the same day, another clash happened in Poswoy, Balbalan, Kalinga which resulted in the death of one NPA rebel and the recovery of a firearm.
