21-yr.-old worker drowns while saving friend in Bokod River

Bokod, Benguet - While he was able to save his friend from drowning, a 21-year old construction worker was not able to save himself and drowned at the Banao River in Ambuklao, Bokod.


The victim, along with five other individuals, proceeded to the lake at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, September 01. to swim and have a picnic.

While there, the group decided to go for a swim and it was around 11:00 a.m. when the victim named Jherby Malugdos Halang, and a 15-year-old girl felt the water current pushing them to the deep part of the river.


Halang then pushed the girl for safety at the shallow portion while a fisherman who saw what was happening immediately approached the girl to help her get out of the water.


As for Halang, he was not able to save himself and was swept away by the raging river waters.


Authorities were immediately called to the scene on same date but the victim's body was not found.


Today, September 02, search and retrieval operation for the victim continued and is being collaboratively done by Bokod Police, Bokod BFP and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.
