80-year-old farmer shot dead Board Member candidate in Mt. Province

Paracelis, Mt. Province – A candidate for provincial board member in Mountain Province was shot dead by an 80-year-old farmer on March 6, 2022 in Dagawe, Poblacion, Paracelis.


The victim was identified as Carino Saggid Tamang, 56, who served as Board Member in Mountain Province from 2007 to 2013 and 2016-2019. He was seeking to return as board member this May 2022 elections.


According to Mt. Province Police Provincial Office, initial investigation of the police disclosed that the victim and Efren Tariago, 80, had a heated argument over a disputed land in front of a store which led to the octogenarian pulling his short firearm and shooting the victim.

Tamang was hit on the left side of his head and was shot twice on his right chest. He was rushed to Paracelis District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.


Tariago, who is a widower and a resident of Bacarri, Paracelis was immediately arrested. The suspect said he shot the victim because he was grabbing his inherited land.

“Ag-agawin na tu met ti dagak idiay Batlan, ket tawid ko pay adiay,” he was quoted saying.

The 80-year-old suspect was brought to the Paracelis Municipal Police Station along with the 9MM Caliber confiscated from his possession.
