Baguio City records 494 HIV-AIDS cases since 1984

Baguio City, Kalinga – More than 400 individuals have already been diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome from 1984 to February 2022 in Baguio City.


According to the Baguio City Public Information Office, a total of 494 HIV-AIDS cases have been recorded for the past 38 years in the city, stating that last February 2022 around seven infections were documented.


Of the 494 cases, 25 succumbed to the disease.


The data revealed that 464 of the infected individuals were males while 30 were females. Most of the reported cases are between the ages of 25 to 34 years old.

It was also disclosed that among the most common mode of transmission are same-sex- sexual intercourse among males which is 276 cases; 128 cases for males having sex with both male and female; 81 cases of male-female sexual intercourse; six cases are unknown; two cases are mother-to-child transmission, and one case is due to blood transfusion.


Meantime, the Baguio City Health Services Office observed a continuous increase in HIV-AIDS cases in the city. This was based on the reactive cases captured in targeted community-based testing. It was noted that a total of 13 patients were diagnosed in one community-based test alone, although not all were permanent residents of Baguio City.


In the Philippines, around 95,212 HIV/AIDS infections have been documented from 1984 to January 2022.


It was revealed that in January 2022 alone, there were 875 new cases documented.
