Benguet forms federation to boost cacao industry

Benguet, Philippines – Cacao production in the Province of Benguet is expected to grow with the formation of federation aimed at helping and assisting cacao growers and processors.

Cacao Growers and Processors of Benguet Baguio Federation was formed and officials took their pledge before Governor Melchor Diclas on February 14, 2022 at Benguet Capitol.

The president of the federation, Nelson Palispis through PTV-Cordillera said that many of the crops of cacao in the province such as those in Sablan, Kapangan and Tuba had been wasted due to lack of market.

This, he explained, prompted them to form the federation to help the groups of cacao growers and processors in the different towns to have their own cacao-brand for the farmers to have source of livelihood.

Meanwhile, Diclas praised the initiative of the cacao farmers to form a federation.

“Nag-federate sila so hopefully, mas lalakas pa yung organization at pagtutulungan nila. May mga product naman sila at at least na-recognize world -wide yung chocolate natin so hopefully tuloy-tuloy at madami pa ang production natin,” said the governor.

Further, agencies such as Department of Trade and Industry of Baguio and Benguet, the Department of Science and Technology, and Office of Provincial Agriculturist likewise showed their support and vowed to contribute for agricultural productivity enhancement for cacao production.

Director of DTI Baguio-Benguet, Atty. Samuel Gallardo, said they will extend their hand to the federation through trainings and equipment under their shared service facility program.
