Benguet gets recycling machines, soon to produce chairs out of waste plastic

La Trinidad, Benguet - With the voluminous amount of plastic wastes being generated in this province, Benguet found an innovative solution to the problem with the installation of a facility that can turn plastic wastes into chairs.

Benguet Environment and Natural Resources Office (BENRO) said the facility situated at the old BTS gym in Wangal, La Trinidadis is now operational and is ready to serve the 13 towns of the province through their respective Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Offices (MENROs).

Last December 2021, the Provincial Government of Benguet received the equipment worth P6.55 million from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The set of equipment, as reported by the Public Information Office of Benguet, includes a shredder machine where plastic wastes are fed through.

After the garbage has been shredded out, it is then washed and dried.

The shredded dried plastic is later loaded into an extruder machine 'before being melted and placed into seven chair mold parts. After going through the pressing and cooling process, the molded parts are then assembled into a plastic seat.'

BENRO Community Development Officer Sinclaire Gawiden said the machine can convert a 25-kilogram of plastic wrappers into one classroom-type chair.

Meanwhile, Governor Dr. Melchor Daguines Diclas said that the facility is of great help not only to the environment but also to students in the province. The chairs made through the use of the facility shall be donated to different schools in the province.

BENRO said they will train their personnel on the use of the equipment for the 'regular operation of the facility.'
