Benguet, Philippines – MayorVictorio Palangdan of Itogon, Benguet, wrote an online petition to the Department of Public Works and Highways for the suspension of the implementation of rock-fall netting projects in their area.
The Itogon Mayor submitted their request after the video of rock-fall netting erosion in Dalupirip, Itogon, went viral on social media on March 10, 2022.
In PTV-Cordillera’s March 18 report, Palangdan said the project was never asked by the local government unit and residents. The department, he added, should instead prioritize other infrastructure projects.
In related news, Mt. Province Broadcasting Corporation – MPBC reported the elders of Itogon support the call of their mayor.
President of Senior Citizens and Council of Elders Officers Mildred Fianza agreed that there are urgent priority projects that the department should focus on and that they will likewise send a letter of appeal to DPWH, expressing their concern.
The department earlier suspended the bidding and implementation of rock-fall netting projects. However, Acting Secretary Roger Mercado on March 7, 2022 issued an order, permitting the implementation.
The agency affirmed the specifications and design parameters of the projects done by the Bureau of Design.
“After the drilling of the hole at yung mga ano, yung last na gagawin dito meron silang tinatawag na hydroseeding na ia-apply, iaapply dito sa mismong project para i-ano nila yung pagtubo ng mga ano, mga plants, na gagawin after the project. Yun na yung mga final na application dito sa project,’ Kevin Simadan, the projects contractor added.
DPWH-CAR assured thorough inspection on the projects to ensure design and quality of materials.
