CAFGU suspected of shooting Benguet farmers arrested, cohort at large

Benguet, Philippines – Authorities arrested a Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) member, after shooting two farmers in Sitio Lebeng in Barangay Lusod on Saturday, April 17. His companion however is still at large.


Philippine National Police – Cordillera identified the arrested suspect as a certain Joel Asingco, 32, and his companion Abron Asingco who is still at large. Both are CAFGU members assigned at Gumhang Patrol Base in Tinoc, Ifugao.


The police said that the two are suspects in killing siblings Agustin Sinpoda Ballagan, 59, and Cristiano Sinpoda Ballagan, 43. Initial investigation reveals that the victims and the suspects allegedly had a land dispute history.



After a hot pursuit operation, operatives of the Police Regional Office Cordillera and the 54th Infantry Batallion were able to catch Joel in Poblacion, Tinoc. He was brought to the Kabayan Municipal Police Station for proper documentation and filing of appropriate charges.


Manhunt is still ongoing for the arrest of Abron, PNP Cordillera says.


Meanwhile, the firearm used in the crime was allegedly thrown at the Baay River, along the boundary of Kabayan and Tinoc.
