Cordilleran high school researchers to compete in World Innovative Science Project Olympiad

Baguio City, Philippines – Two high school researchers in the Cordillera region will be showcasing to the world their brilliance and innovativeness in the 2023 World Innovative Science Project Olympiad(WISPO).


WISPO is a scientific project competition on innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math issues. It covers four general disciplines – Science and Mathematics, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Science, and Energy.


This year’s WISPO is set in December in Bandung City, West Java in Indonesia.

Grade 9 students Han Na D. Park and Eliz Jae F. Gasatan of the Philippine Science High School – Cordillera earned their spot in said international competition after bagging awards in the 2023 International Science Technology and Engineering Competition (ISTEC) held in May.


Park and Gasatan’s research entitled, ‘Dye-Sensitized Solar Panel Cell: Harnessing Sunlight Rays as Solar Energy Based on Biodegradable Media’ won gold in the Junior High School Engineering Category of the contest, according to the Baguio City Public Information Office.


They were likewise hailed as the Best Engineering Research, besting participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, and the Philippines.


The highlight of their research is the use of leaf pigments from Philippine oregano, Benguet sunflower, and Bangbangsit as dye-sensitizers.


Having won the ISTEC, they are the delegates set to be sent for this year’s World Innovative Science Project Olympiad.
