DA-Cordillera intensifies hog repopulation efforts in Abra, grants P5.5M swine repopulation project

Villaviciosa, Abra – A community in Villaviciosa, Abra is expected to recover soon from financial losses they incurred due to African Swine Fever (ASF) after a multi-purpose cooperative in the area was granted P5.5 million worth of swine repopulation projects.

The project is under the Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE) program of the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera, with a focus on hog repopulation and the establishment of swine farms and facilities.

The program is aimed at improving swine production and ensuring the sufficiency of pork and pork products in the country.

Being a recipient of said project, Tamac Multi-purpose Cooperative was awarded a newly constructed pen, livestock, and grower feeds last Thursday, Oct. 12.

Accordingly, P4.9 million of the total funds was allotted for the construction of the pig pen, while the remaining amount was utilized in procuring the livestock and the feeds.

During the turnover ceremony, the cooperative’s president conveyed her gratitude to implementing agencies for pursuing the project in their community despite its distance from the capital town.

It is said the travel time from Bangued to the aforementioned barangay in Villavicosia is 3 hours.

Mayor Jose Lagen Jr., on his part, urged the recipients to take advantage of the opportunity given to them and to manage it diligently for the project to prosper.

“This is not just a project but a symbol of love and care from the government for you in the remote places. So, I remind you to manage this also out of love so that it will succeed,” Lagen said.

With the implementation of the project, he expressed hope that it would help in having enough supply of pork in the area and eventually lead to the stabilization of pork prices.

Meanwhile, the event was graced by DA-CAR Chief of Agricultural Engineering Division Salvador Filemon, DA-CAR Regulations Chief Ruben Dulagan, Provincial Veterinarian Jomar Sales, and Villaviciosa Vice-Mayor Marjorie Lagen.
