Tabuk City, Kalinga – the Department of Trade and Industry Kalinga, in partnership with DTI CAR, held the 1st Intellectual Property Summit in the province at Davidson Hotel and Restaurant on October 14, 2025 to raise awareness on importance of Intellectual Property (IP) and the creator’s rights.

The CREATE IP Summit forms part of DTI and IPOPHL’s continuing efforts to ensure that local talents, traditions, and innovations receive the recognition and protection they deserve.

Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, designs, and symbols, names, and images used in commerce, which are protected by law and provide creators with exclusive rights to their work for a certain period.

In an Interview with GURU Press, DTI CAR Regional Director, Atty. Raymond G. Panhon shared that protection of intellectual property is important, pointing out that without the protection, the creations of real owners will be prone to exploitation and infringement.

“Of course it is important, just like any property for example, yung lupa mo dapat titulo mo yan, sayo lang yan kasi naka pangalan sayo. That is also true with intellectual property, you need some level of protection, para ikaw lang ang pwedeng mag gain dun at ikaw lang ang may right don. To protect you from other unauthorized use of your intellectual property,” said Panhon.

The event featured resource speakers from IPOPHL, including Ms. Emmelina C. Masanque and Ms. Josephine J. Santiago, who shared practical insights on registering and managing IP assets. They emphasized that protecting one’s creative work not only secures ownership but also opens doors for business growth and collaboration.

Taking place from October 14 to 17, the event seeks to uphold cultural rights by integrating arts, traditional knowledge, and indigenous enterprises to foster a sustainable and competitive Kalinga.
