Benguet, Philippines - Families of responders who died on their way to clear debris from a landslide in La Trinidad, Benguet in late July are set to benefit from this year’s nationwide fun run to be staged by the Civil Service Commission (CSC).

Redentor Roldan and Rex Gayang, both workers of Benguet Provincial Engineering Office, were part of a team responding to a landslide-clearing operation in Barangay Bineng amid the monsoon rains on July 29.

The team was aboard a loader, and while navigating the curved road, the vehicle’s brake reportedly failed and plunged into a 100-meter ravine in Lower Kesbeng, Poblacion.

Roldan and Gayang sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the Benguet General Hospital, but were declared dead on arrival.

The families of the two workers were among the recipients of the CSC’s annual fun run, as announced during the 125th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary (PCSA) media launch last week.

The CSC will conduct a simultaneous fun run across the country on September 7 to raise funds for the families of civil servants who perished in the performance of their duty.

Held as part of the 125th PCSA, the event supports the CSC’s Pamanang Lingkod Bayani (PLBi) Program which provides recognition, financial assistance, and education opportunities to the immediate family members of fallen officials and employees.

Last year, over 36,000 runners from the government agencies participated in the benefit run, said the agency, adding that it hopes to surpass the figure this year.

Fitness enthusiasts, government workers, and interested participants may choose from 1k, 3k, or 5k race categories, with a registration fee of P250 each. Registration ended on August 29.

In the Cordillera Region, the venue will be at Lake Drive, Burnham Park, Baguio City.

The regional offices of CSC will likewise host a Servant-Hero Mascot or Cosplay Competition, showcasing creative portrayals of government workers as modern-day heroes.
