Fire displaces 4 families in Baguio City

Baguio City, Philippines – At least four families or 15 individuals were rendered homeless after a fire broke out in a residential structure in Honeymoon-Holyghost around Sunday midnight, Aug. 27, 2023.

The incident was caused by a candle lighted as an offering for the repose of the soul of the house patriarch who died the day before, according to a report from Punong Barangay Romulo Wayway through Baguio City Public Information Office.

The report stated the candle may have toppled and burned the table cloth starting the fire at 12:30 a.m.

The fire spread while the occupants of the house were sleeping. Fortunately, a private car passing by the place noticed the fire. He sounded his horn, waking them up.

The incident was reported to Baguio City Fire Station and with the aid of other responders, the blaze was declared under control at around 1:48 a.m.

As immediate assistance, affected families were given food packs, hygiene kits, family kits, and sleeping kits from the Department of Social Welfare and Development Office.

Other assistance such as financial aid will later be provided, said the City Information Office.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong, meanwhile, expressed gratitude to the agencies and offices who lent a hand in battling the fire and assisting the victims. These include the local fire station, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Baguio City Police Office, Baguio Water District, Benguet Electric Cooperative, Sunshine Volunteers and Baguio 911 On Call, DSWD, OCSWDO, and his personal assistants.
