Tabuk City, Kalinga – A 37-year-old man from Rizal, Kalinga lost a finger to a firecracker on Monday afternoon, marking the first recorded firecracker-related injury in Kalinga this Yuletide season.

The Rizal Municipal Police Station said the victim, a resident of Barangay Macutay, was injured after picking up a pla-pla that initially failed to explode. The firecracker suddenly detonated in his hand, severing one of his fingers and injuring other parts of his body.

Pla-pla is among the firecrackers banned in the Philippines. It is described as a powerful, triangle-shaped explosive usually wrapped in brown paper or orange plastic. It is louder and larger than the “five-star” firecracker and is prohibited due to its dangerous explosive power.

The victim was rushed to Juan M. Duyan Hospital and was later referred to the Kalinga Provincial Hospital in Bulanao, Tabuk City.

This incident is the first firecracker-related injury recorded in Kalinga for the current Yuletide season.

Other illegal fireworks cited by the Philippine National Police include Watusi, Lolo Thunder, Pop Pop, Atomic Triangle, Mother Rockets, Piccolo, Goodbye Philippines, Five Star, Delima, Giant Bawang, Goodbye Napoles, Giant Whistle Bomb, Coke-in-Can Atomic Bomb, Bin Laden, Large-size Judas Belt, Pillbox, Super Lolo, Kabasi, Goodbye Bading, Super Yolanda, Boga, Kwiton, Hello Columbia, Tuna, GPH Nuclear, Special, Goodbye Chismosa, King Kong, Dart Bomb, all overweight and oversized FCPD, all imported finished products, other unlabeled locally made FCPD products, other types of firecrackers with other brands/names equivalent to those that are prohibited, and other unlabeled locally made FCPD products.

Local authorities in Kalinga earlier warned the public against illegal firecracker and pyrotechnics and urged the people to celebrate the Christmas and New Year in peace, good health, and without injuries by not patronizing these banned explosives.
