Tabuk City, Kalinga―With the onset of this year’s warm and dry season, OIC Manager Engr. Tito Lingan of the Kalinga Electric Cooperative (KAELCO) is appealing to all member-consumers to limit the use of high wattage appliances this summer.

This he said is one of the causes of possible power outages or interruptions in the province.

In a phone interview with Engr. Lingan, he said that people tend to use more appliances during summer time to cool down their houses or offices as well as their food.

“We all know mainit during summer and we expect na yung mga appliances of our member-consumer-owners will definitely be switched on like air conditioning units so lahat ng hindi ginagamit (nuong tag-lamig), they will again start using (them),” he said.

The use of additional appliances is expected to increase the load of electricity which may overload the transformers and even the electrical substation.

Lingan explains that KAELCO experiences blackouts like any other distribution utilities because of the rise in the energy demand affecting the energy generating plants.

“The system operator or mga system generator will schedule a load traffic kumbaga mag i-isolate sila o mag o-off sila nung mga particular na line sections or mga transmission line nila going towards yung mga distribution utilities,” he explained.

“Kahit sabihin natin na iniiwasan natin yan, that we do our best to maintain our system na energized but definitely because of summer time we expect na mayroong mangyayari na scheduled interruptions probably from NGCP and of course, if we are required to isolate some areas to address yung overloading,” he added.

Meantime, Lingan requests the consumers to limit the use of appliances especially those with high wattages to at least avoid overloading which might bring a bigger problem.

“We are requesting, pleading wag muna silang masyadong gumamit ng kanilang mga appliances especially yung mabibigat para naman maiwasan yung overloading ng ating substation which might cause major problems and mas mahirap yun,” he said.

As of this time, unscheduled brown outs were caused by uncontrolled circumstances like tree branches hitting a power line, broken insulator, and others.
