Kibungan, Benguet - Loom weaving was once thriving industry and a part of the lives of the people of Kibungan, Benguet, until it was replaced by other means of livelihood, making it a dying tradition.

Recently, however, with the aim to revive loom weaving in the area, the Department of Trade and Industry-Cordillera Administrative Region (DTI-CAR) conducted a skills training program for 12 participants at Poblacion, Kibungan on August 3-5, 2021.

The training program is expected to be an alternative livelihood for the participants and means to attract more to join the dying industry.

The said training was made possible through DTI’s Negosyo Center (NC) with the partnership of DTI-Baguio Benguet, the Local Government Unit of Kibungan, and the participants from the province.

According to the Kibungan Local Government Unit (LGU), the training was funded thru collaboration between and among the Provincial LGU, Municipal LGU, and the DTI.

The Provincial LGU provided two loom weaving sets thru the initiatives of Governor Melchor D. Diclas and Provincial Tourism Eleazar Cariaz for the hands-on intensive tutorial.

Hands-on trials were done by the participants to feel the experience of warping and wefting.

The trainers also demonstrated other techniques of weaving like tabby weaving, rya knots, interlocking, soumak, weaving with roving, loop stitch, and taking the weave off the loom. The next training will focus on lectures regarding color combinations, patterns, and designs.

According to participants, they are thankful that they were able to learn various techniques.

The municipality is planning to conduct a series of more trainings to further enhance the skills of the weavers and the product quality as well as offer loan windows to the trainees for their starting capital.
