Tabuk City, Kalinga – A student from Kalinga State University is one of the country’s 27 delegates to the 2021 Ship for Southeast Asia and Japan Youth Program.

Said event is held to promote friendship and mutual understanding among youths of the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Japan. This is to broaden their global perspectives and strengthen their capacities for international collaboration.

Vincent Valenzuela, a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Social Studies fourth-year student, was selected by the National Youth Commission of the Philippines and the cabinet of Japan to participate in the said event which will be held from November 2021 to January 2022.

In an interview, Valenzuela disclosed that he applied for the program in September 2021, and fortunately, he was one of the 27 youth leaders who were chosen and the lone delegate who came from the Cordillera Administrative Region.

“I’m grateful na isa ako sa mga mapalad na napili. Isang karangalan sa akin na mapabilang sa mga mag-rerepresenta sa ating bansa. Isa na naman itong learning experience para sa akin, at lalo pang mahahasa ang aking kasanayan sa pamumuno, kakayahan sa pakikipag-usap, at madadagdagan ang aking kaalaman,” Valenzuela said

“Bonus na lang yung makabuo ka ng isang magandang samahan sa kapwa mo delegates,” he added.

Qualifications

To qualify for the program, a youth leader must be a Filipino Citizen, 18-30 years old (as of April 1, 2021), interested in the youth exchange program between ASEAN and Japan, a prominent active youth leader in the group, organization, community or society, with a good command of English to participate in the discussion activities, Philippine passport holder and must be willing to be an NYC volunteer or to comply with post-program activities.

A delegate must have not participated in previous SSEAYP, must be able to fully participate in every activity throughout the program, and should attend the online pre-departure briefing where there will be initial discussions on the given themes/topics.

Activities for the SSEAYP program

Activities for the SSEAYP program include institutional visits to Japan and the various port-of-call countries that the ship sails to for the year, cultural displays, social and bonding activities, and discussions on various topics.

Participants will be involved in peer learning sessions through sharing and discussing the organizers’ knowledge and experiences. These sessions focus on improving presentation and project management skills and learning effective approaches in conducting workshops, lectures, and discussions.

Accordingly, the content of the peer learning sessions will not be limited to the organizers’ own experiences and knowledge in relation to their previous or current studies and activities but also includes reports of activities in their respective countries that are worth sharing with other countries.

The expected outcome of the program is to cultivate the youth who are capable of exercising their leadership skills in various fields in globalizing society and to contribute to society in areas such as youth development.
