Tinglayan, Kalinga – Being away from their home province didn’t stop the yKalingas in Hong Kong from celebrating their culture and heritage.

On April 30, the Overseas Filipino Workers from Kalinga who are in their native attires convened on Chater Road in Central, Hong Kong to mark the 13th Kalinga Day in said country.

Gracing this year’s celebration is Tinglayan Mayor Sacrament Gumilab who flew with his wife to Hong Kong to celebrate with the yKalingas.

In videos uploaded on Facebook, the mayor was seen playing the gong in a community dance and performing ‘Tupayya’ with his other half.

Gumilab, in his message, commended these yKalingas in Hong Kong for carrying their heritage and the Kalinga identity with them outside the country. He also appreciated how empowered the women are, citing how great they are at playing the gongs.

The mayor encouraged the OFWs to sustain the unity they have displaced in the event and to keep helping one another.

“Sapay kuma ta diay urnus ti Awhong chi Gangsa ket isu met ti kaurnus yu dita Hongkong nga agtitinnulung tapnu maragpat yu ti ara-paap nga sumaya-at wennu lumin-awa ti panagbiag,” he said.

Gumilab likewise acknowledged the warm welcome and the hospitality of the yKalingas during their stay in Hong Kong.
