Nurse losses P.6M to illegal recruiter

Cagayan, Philippines — A nurse who wished to work overseas lost more than half a million to an illegal recruiter, who was later arrested in Claveria this November 3.


A report from the Police Regional Office 2 – Public Information Office revealed that the suspect, Dexter John Lagmay alias Gibson Muanjit, 44, was nabbed around 9 o’clock in the morning when the police served his arrest warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court in La Trinidad, Benguet.


The warrant of arrest was for a case of "Illegal Recruitment Committed by Syndicate" or violation of Republic Act 8042, which was filed against him.

According to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Baguio City who joined the Cagayan police in the said operation, a nurse who wanted to apply as a nursing aide in Barcelona, Spain fell victim to the suspect who was said to be an illegal recruiter for not being authorized by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration to recruit individuals to work overseas.


The victim paid the suspect a total of P664,397 from November 4, 2020, to May 12, 2021. The money was said to be his fees for medical, visa, broker, embassy, training, and plane ticket.

The suspect is now under the custody of CIDG Baguio and was set to be turned over to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
