Abra, Philippines – Steady water supply is now assured in the farmlands of three Abra towns with the completion of three diversion dams.

This year, 12 diversion dams – infrastructures that redirect water to flow into a canal for irrigation systems are being implemented under irrigation network services in the Cordillera region, the Department of Agriculture – Cordillera said.

In Abra, three projects namely, Gonggong Diversion Dam in Poblacion, Malibcong; Lam-ag Diversion Dam in San Ramon East, Manabo; and Ressang Diversion Dam in Cautit, Pidigan are set to distribute water supply to around 59 hectares.

The establishment of P12.868 million worth of projects was requested by farmer irrigators’ associations and local government units to boost the production of rice which is considered a major agricultural crop in the province.

Funded under the Rice Banner Program and implemented by the Regional Agricultural Engineering Division of the agriculture agency, the projects were completed in March 2023.

With the construction of the diversion dams, farmers who used to plant only during the wet season can now do the same in the dry season. They, however, must make good use of the infrastructure.

“They have to possess the sense of ownership and practice their operation and maintenance plan in their projects which will be monitored by the partner LGUs, the DA – RFO CAR, including the Bureau of Soils and Watershed Management,” RAED Chief, Engr. Filemon A. Salvador said in a statement.

The projects are scheduled to be formally turned over this July, alongside the 36th Cordillera founding anniversary celebration.
