Baguio City, Philippines – A total of 55 women in Baguio City were documented to have been physically abused in 2021, topping the list of cases for Women in Especially Difficult Circumstances (WEDC) in the city.

The data was disclosed this March 2022 by the Office of Baguio City Social Welfare and Development.

WEDC refers to victims and survivors of sexual and physical abuse, illegal recruitment, prostitution, trafficking, armed conflict, women in detention, and the victims and survivors of rape and incest and other related cases.

During an interview on Usapang PIA radio program on Z Radio, Coralie Dulnuan of CSWD Baguio revealed that they recorded 98 cases of WEDC in the city from January to December last year.

Of the number, 55 were cases of women who were physically abused; 28 were psychologically abused; 12 were economically abused; 7 for violation of Republic Act 975; and 5 were sexually abused.

Additionally, 22 of the 98 recorded cases last year were filed in court while 78 were not.

Dulnuan appealed to women who experienced any kind of abuse or violence to report to the authorities. She also stressed the need for community support to stop violence against women.

According to the 2017 National Demographic Health Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority, 1 in 4 Filipino women, ages 15-49, experienced physical, emotional, or sexual abuse from their husband or partner. Moreover, around 18,945 violence against women cases were recorded by the Philippine National Police from March 2020 to August 2021.
