For runners seeking more than just a finish line, the upcoming Lumin-Awa 10.3 Road-to-Trail Challenge 2026 offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Kalinga’s most breathtaking natural treasures—the majestic Chico River.

Set on June 27, 2026, the adventure run invites participants to leave behind the ordinary and embrace a course where every stride comes with sweeping views of riverbanks, rugged trails, and the picturesque landscapes that have long defined the province.

More than a sporting event, the challenge is designed to showcase the growing potential of the Chico River corridor as a destination for outdoor recreation, eco-tourism, and sustainable adventure.

From the starting point in Barangay Calanan to Bado Dangwa, Tabuk City, runners will navigate a route that combines paved roads and natural trails, offering an experience that blends fitness, nature, and discovery.

Participants may choose from 3K, 6K, and 10.3K categories, making the event accessible to both seasoned runners and beginners eager to test their endurance while enjoying the scenery.

A Race with a Bigger Purpose

Behind the challenge is a broader vision for the Chico River.

During the Special Management Committee meeting on June 9, Captain Noel Bagispas explained that the event will serve as a public introduction to the Chico River Integrated Development System (CRIDS), an initiative that seeks to balance tourism promotion, environmental protection, infrastructure development, and livelihood opportunities along the river corridor.

By bringing people closer to the Chico River, organizers hope to inspire greater appreciation for one of Kalinga’s most important natural resources and encourage responsible stewardship of its environment.

The event also highlights the many outdoor activities that the river area can offer, including trekking, biking, trail running, and water-based adventures—opportunities that support the long-term goals of the LUMIN-AWA development program.

Safety First on the Trail

While adventure is at the heart of the challenge, organizers are also prioritizing participant safety.

Bagispas assured the public that preparations are being closely coordinated with local government units, law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and partner organizations.

“Sinisiguro naman po namin ang maayos at ligtas na conduct nitong event… nakipag-coordinate na din po kami sa mga local authorities natin at iba pang partner agencies. Maglalagay kami ng mga security personnel, medical teams, emergency responders, at traffic management measures sa buong rota para ma-ensure yung safety ng runners natin,” he said.

Security personnel, medical teams, emergency responders, and traffic management measures will be deployed throughout the route to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

Adding significance to the event, the challenge also forms part of the celebration of the 4th Founding Anniversary of the 103rd Infantry Battalion, carrying the theme: “Apat na Taon ng Nagkakaisang Paglilingkod – Dedikasyon at Tapat na Serbisyo para sa Kalinga.”
