"Kasambahay" ranks 10th in October 2022 Teacher's Licensure Exam

Updated: Dec 27, 2022

If there is one lesson that Ira Jean Saga-oc learned from living in difficulty, it is to work harder. This was what she carried in her journey to being a topnotcher of the October 2, 2022 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).

In the result released by the Professional Regulation Commission this December 16, 49,783 examinees passed the LET Elementary level out of 91,468 who took the exam on October 2.

Among these passers, Ira who hailed from Balantoy, Balbalan ranked 10th with 92.60% overall average.

Ira graduated Bachelor of Elementary Education at St. Louis College of Bulanao in 2020.

Once a kasambahay

In her interview with Guru Press Cordillera, Ira relayed that their life was not easy. She is the second of four children and their parents’ source of income is farming which is just enough to cover their daily expenses.

Financial difficulties, however, did not hinder Ira from getting to college. It was not easy as she had to work as a housekeeper in Tabuk in order to sustain her tuition fee and her studies.

“Ako po kasi yung first na nag-college sa amin so nung 1st year ako, naging working student ako para may pambayad sa tuition. May times na gusto ko na lang huminto sa pag-aaral kasi kulang talaga sa financial,” she recounted.

She continued being a working student until she got the PLDT - Gabay Guro Scholarship which helped her cope with meager resources.

On July 30, 2020, Ira graduated and received her much-desired diploma.

Doing her Best for her Family

Ira relayed she intended to pass and top the LET. For this reason, she reviewed extensively and she made sure not to miss any lecture while reviewing at Dr. Carl E Balita Review Center – Kalinga.

She added that she stayed late at night and sacrificed social pleasures just to go over her reviewers and lecture notes. She also recalled that she was not able to meet her bills on time while reviewing but this did not stop her from achieving her goals.

While preparing for the board exam, Ira conquered anxiety attacks, financial difficulties, and delayed payment of bills in order to achieve her aspiration of topping the LET for her family who she wanted to experience a better life.

“Pinangako ko sa sarili ko na gagawin ko ang best ko para maging guro at the same time maiangat yung pamilya ko mula sa hirap ng buhay. Ayokong hanggang dun lang ang kalagayan nila, gusto kong iparanas sa kanila ang maginhawang buhay,” Ira shared.

All of Ira’s hard work and sacrifices later paid off as her name was included in the list of Top 10 in the October 2022 LET Elementary level.

If there is one thing she could share with those who wanted to take the LET, it is the value of sacrifice. She quoted the saying, “if you don’t sacrifice for what you want, what you want will be the sacrifice.”
